The home improvement shows make do-it-yourself (DIY) projects look easy. Heck, if you had a full camera crew and a professional remodeling support staff, you could make just about anything look easy! If you want to know if you should do it yourself, help is on the way. Here are five questions you should ask before starting any do-it-yourself projects.

Can I Really Do It Myself?

Let’s be honest. Not all DIY projects are created equal. While changing out a couple of old light switches should not present a problem for the average homeowner, rewiring your home is a little more involved and requires a higher skill level.

Before you begin your DIY projects, always ask if you can realistically finish the job safely, thoroughly and economically.

How Long Will I Stay in the Home?

If you are planning to sell the home in a month, a major overhaul of the living room is probably not the best idea. As a rule of thumb, the shorter the length of stay, the smaller the DIY project you should attempt.

Cosmetic Fix or Complete Remodel?

Define the scope of your do-it-yourself project. Changing the faucet and showerhead in the bathroom to match a new decorating scheme is a cosmetic fix, and you could probably take care of that over a weekend. Stripping the bathroom down to the stud walls and floor joists and starting from scratch will consume more of your time and resources and put greater demands on you and your family. Knowing the size of the task before you start in, lets you plan out your time and manage the project more efficiently.

Am I Prepared for Upheaval?

All DIY projects upset the daily routine. The bigger the project or the longer the DIY project takes, the greater the upset in the household routine. Construction dust, noise, and the loss of the areas of your home under renovation create stress for everybody and can put a strain on relationships.

Does the Remodel Fit the Style of My Home?

Your do-it-yourself remodel should add to the overall style of your home. Plopping Japanese-style tearoom motifs in a house that is otherwise decorated as a rustic English home creates a patchwork effect. A non-unified style detracts from your home’s appearance and ultimately hurts its value.

It’s a Go!

After you have honestly answered these five questions, you should have a clear understanding of the scope of your project, how long it will take, and what you need to get the DIY project done. Now, it’s time for a trip to the home improvement store…
