East Melbourne

East Melbourne is one of Melbourne’s earliest established suburbs, just adjacent to Melbourne CBD. It has a population of slightly over 4,300 according to the 2006 census, and is home to a number of government buildings including Parliamment House in Spring Street, as well as residential properties. Some specialist hospitals are also located in this suburb. The historic St. Patrick’s Cathedral is located in East Melbourne.

There is a small commercial centre along Wellington Parade but nearly all of the suburb of East Melbourne is comprised of parklands and sporting grounds. There is the 26 hectare Fitzroy Garden and the Treasury Gardens on the corner of Spring Street and Wellington Parade where locals and tourists can enjoy the great outdoors. The famous Melbourne Cricket Ground is found in this suburb where many football and cricket matches are held. It is the main arena for many significant sporting events including the AFL Football Grand Final as well many events of the 2006 Commonwealth Games.

East Melbourne has a rich history and you can find many Melbourne landmarks in this small suburb. It is bounded to the west by the Treasury and Fitzroy Gardens, to the north by Victoria Parade, to the east by Hoddle Street, and to the south by Yarra Park. Cook’s Cottage, one of Melbourne’s more important tourist attractions is found here in East Melbourne.

East Melbourne reflects the history of Australia, with its beautiful gardens and grand houses, including workmen’s cottages reflective of the gold rush era. One can find cast iron lacework adorning many old houses and cobbled lanes that lead to old coach houses.
